Thaiföldi szerzetesek a buddhizmus államvallássá nyilvánítását követelik

Több száz buddhista szerzetes elefántokat vezetve vonult végig szerdán Bangkok utcáin, követelve, hogy nyilvánítsák Thaiföldön államvallássá a buddhizmust.

A rendőrség azt szerette volna, ha legalább az elefántokat sikerül visszatartani a főváros határán, de kisebb dulakodás után a tüntetők a nagy testű állatokkal együtt folytathatták útjukat a parlament épülete felé, amelynek közelében más demonstráló csoportokkal akarnak találkozni.

Thaiföldön tavaly szeptember 19-én vértelen államcsínyt hajtottak végre, Szonji Bunjaratgin tábornok vezetésével. A puccsista vezetők bizottságot bíztak meg azzal, hogy dolgozzon ki új alkotmányt. A mostani felvonulók azt akarják, hogy a készülő új alkotmány mondja ki a buddhizmus államvallás jellegét.

Bunjaratgin tábornok kedden támogatta az elgondolást az ország déli részén romló helyzet, a muzulmán lázongások miatt.

Thaiföld lakosainak több mint 90 százaléka buddhista. A muzulmánok az ország legdélibb részén vannak többségben. Három évvel ezelőtt fellángolt felkelésük nyomán eddig mintegy kétezren vesztették életüket.

Thaiföld lakossága csaknem 95%-ban Theravada Buddhista, 4,6% muzulmán, 0,7% keresztény és egyébb kisebbségekkel. A Theravada Buddhizmust a kormány felügyeli és támogatja.

A Theravada (”Az Öregek Útja”), a buddhizmus ma létező iskolái közül a legősibb, Délkelet-Ázsiában (Thaiföld, Srí Lanka, Burma, Kambodzsa, Laosz) elterjedt ága.

Szerzeteseik számos kormányzati jutalékot élveznek, például tömegközlekedéssel ingyenesen utazhatnak. A thai buddhizmus erősen a tradicionális hit befolyása alatt áll.
